When is the best time to buy PC games on Steam?

Short answer: During one of Steam's four seasonal sales (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), or whenever the specific game you want hits your target price. Every released game can join the seasonal sales, so they're the most reliable window. The next one is the Winter Sale, Dec 17, 2026 – Jan 4, 2027.

Why seasonal sales are the safest bet

Valve says it runs four Steam-wide seasonal sales a year. They're open to all released games, and joining one doesn't trigger a discount cooldown [1]. So most games can be discounted then.

But games also go on sale between big events

Developers run their own discounts and themed fests throughout the year (see Steam sale dates). If you care about one game, a price alert beats waiting for a calendar date.

How to never miss it

  1. Wishlist the game on Steam. Valve emails wishlisters when a seasonal-sale discount is 20% or more [1].
  2. Or set your own target price with the free PriceRook Discord bot: /watch Hades 20.
